The Electric Disco.

It’s been 35 years since the release of The KLF’s ambient classic "Chill Out", the essential ingredient for 90's post-rave comedowns and late-night journeys of self-discovery. Alongside The Orb’s "Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld", it provided the unofficial soundtrack to a generation’s chemical fuelled descent into the after-hours.
Fast forward to 2025 and musican / filmkakers Will Cookson and Tom Haverly, have revisited and reinterpreted this classic album, creating a 40 minute audio, visual collage, spliced together from their personal archive of field recordings, found sounds and sonic textures.
As well as the KLF original, and further inspiration from ambient artists such as Brian Eno and Philip Glass, "Still Out" first came to be during the summer of 2023 after Will and Tom relocated to Devon , effectively moving themselves off grid and into a remote cabin with no electricity or mobile reception.
Referring to their composition as "part-soundtrack, part-meditative experiment", the intention was to create a soundscape that reflected "the mental and emotional shift that occurs when stepping away from the routine of daily life"
The visual counterpart came to life when Will met with filmmaker Rufus Exton, who after discussing the landscapes evoked in the music, created a 40-minute film, inspired by a road trip they took from North Yorkshire to North Devon in the summer of 2024, as a reflection on friendship, landscape, and the passage of time,
Still Out is a beautiful tribute to the KLF's ambient classic, a soothing, meditative journey into the ether and the perfect antidote to the noise and chaos of the modern world we live in.
The first pressing sold out instantly, but there’s still a chance to grab the second edition on their Bandcamp. It’s a limited run, so don’t sleep on it — they won’t last long.
