Danny Mclewin, is one of the best diggers in the game right now. Consistently unearthing left of centre, private press nuggets from far flung corners of the globe that have seemingly gone unheard until now, but fit perfectly alongside our modern take on cosmic, balearic, disco eclecticism.
Alongside his productions as half of the almighty Psychemagik, Danny has also been DJing and releasing killer edits under the Skyrager alias for the last 7 or 8 years and this spring sees the release of his latest essential 12", cheekily titled 'Love Is The Massage', available now on his own killer HITD label.
Two of the tracks were originally available as a part of digital EP over on bandcamp, but they have been joined by a third cut to make up this vinyl release of Danny's signature brand of love-injected magic.
'Love Affair' opens the EP with 13 minutes of effortlessly cool, uplifting late-night boogie. A yearning lead vocal and some superb 80's call and response moments glide over the looping funk guitars and an analog bassline that rolls throughout the track.
Danny stretches the groove out across the entire first side, dipping in and out of extended breakdowns, before bringing the vocal back with extra FX and a wicked synth line that plays out through the outro.
Side B turns up the heat with 'Love Is Good', a carnival-ready party starter bursting with soca melodies. A stunning lead vocal and singalong chorus are backed by a killer rhythm section of bubbling tropical basslines and sun-soaked guitar licks accompanied by lo-fi keys, adding that unmistakable private press magic!
The EP finishes off with the epic 'Love is Bad'. It's exactly the kind of effortlessly smooth yet obscure AOR / funk that Danny seems to pluck out of nowhere, casually dropping into his mixes, only for them to become both instant classics and must have's in every DJ's wants list.
Killer guitars, glistening synths, a funky slapped bassline and vocal to die for, this track alone is worth the price of entry and is the perfect way to close out the EP!
Production as always is on point, mastered by the supremely talented Arsenii Tiknonenko in NYC and the psychedelic sleeve design courtesy of the immensely talented Luke Insect completes the cosmic package.
It is an essential record, all killer no filler and ready to set any dancefloor alight..
