London-based balearic champions Statues are back with a killer double A-side, out this week on Melbourne label Proto-Exotica. The release pairs two original tracks with remixes from Mass Density Human.
Sign It Off opens the EP with the familiar Statues sound. A warm analog bassline and synth swells drift over live drums in a dreamlike, shoegazy haze, before being joined by a synth lead and guitars which delicately weave in and out of the mix.
It's a vibe that Statues do so well. Clocking in around 100bpm, it's a gentle groover that would work equally well as a set opener as it would at peak time.
Statues - Sign it off
The first of the MDH remixes steps the tempo up from the original mix. Built around an almost country-esque picked guitar line, reverb-heavy vocal textures and dreamy synth lines, the hazy ambience of the original is still there, but a heavy four-to-the-floor kick places this one firmly on the dancefloor.

The EP continues with Surfing, the second of the original tracks from Statues. It immediately instils a sense of calm and tranquility as gentle guitar arpeggios nestle against atmospheric synth washes and ambient textures.
A delayed guitar and airy synth pads add to the layered soundscape, slowly building the track before the drums finally kick in. For all its complexity, it remains beautifully restrained and laid back, a real showcase of the band's musicianship.
Surfing
For their second remix, Mass Density Human do an about turn and step firmly away from the dancefloor, surfacing the ambient intricacies of Surfing, the delicate guitars, keys and textures are brought to the forefront in a lush cinematic expanse, as a spacey synth line drifts its way in and out of the track.

We've said it before, but Statues are one of our favourite bands right now and this release is up there with their best.
The EP is available as a digital download via the Proto-Exotica Bandcamp.
To coincide with the release, Bradley Lucke has put together a mix for us which you can listen to here.
