The Illusions - Find Your Way

Find Your Way is the debut album from Ibiza-based collective The Illusions, a seven-piece ensemble that grew out of jam sessions at the legendary WOM Radio Café in Santa Eulària to bring together some of the island's finest musicians.

Produced and mixed by internationally acclaimed producer and jazz musician Nathan Haines, Find Your Way blends jazz, funk, soul, Afro-influenced rhythms and the band's inherent Balearic sensibilities, combining the raw energy of the band's live performances with rich arrangements and polished production.

The title track, Find Your Way, sets the tone for the album, showcasing the band's tight jazz-funk sound and incredible musicianship. Loose broken beats and a smooth bassline provide the backdrop to a track rich in counter-melodies, subtle synth lines, keys and an infectious sax lead.

Juju Mello draws on the band's Nigerian funk influences, as Afrobeat percussion and chants groove alongside a Fela Kuti-esque brass section and vocals in an authentic take on a classic sound, hypnotically building over six and a half minutes into what I can imagine is a highlight of the band's live sets.

A slower, more soulful side emerges on The Stream, where Antonio Blakstad's vocals are backed by woozy, head-nodding beats, giving the track a smooth '90s R&B feel, before Slow It Down and Float return to the band's jazz-funk sound, weaving delicate jazz-fusion guitar and breezy sax lines over the bands impeccably tight rhythm section.

The album winds down with the chilled-out hip-hop of Psalms. Throwing back once again to the golden era of late '90s and early '00s hip-hop, this laid-back closer serves as a final reminder of both the band's remarkable diversity and Nathan Haines' polished production.

This is a superb album from start to finish, taking in jazz, Afrobeat, soul, R&B, hip-hop and more. The production is slick, the playing immaculate, and I can see this marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in Ibiza's rich musical tapestry.
