Lunar Canyon - Hawks Call

The new single from Lunar Canyon feels like a chilled out cinematic trip through the sun baked desert vistas and peyote tinged mirages of a Morricone classic.

Lunar Canyon - Hawks Call

We’ve been big fans of Paul Withey's musical output for some time. From the AOR disco leanings of Shake Tiger Shake to his solo electro boogie work on Ali Renault’s Vivod, his collaboration with Richard Hall of Wrekin Havoc as SuperFU, and his self released material on Delta City Recordings.

His latest project, Lunar Canyon, sees him team up with long time friend and collaborator Alan Hill. Together they have crafted a sound they describe as “Balearic Country”, shaped in part by a recent trip to LA’s Laurel Canyon to celebrate Paul’s marriage to long time musical partner and vocalist Sarah Lazenby.

Hawks Call is a slow, hypnotic head nodder that locks you in from the start, built around a shuffling percussive beat, looping bassline and gently picked guitars. A lonesome whistled melody weaves in and out of the mix, creating a cinematic soundscape that evokes sun baked desert vistas and peyote tinged mirages straight out of a Morricone film.

The always on point Coyote are called in for remix duties, subtly reworking the intricacies of the original, adding a little more weight to the percussion and bringing the tremolo’d guitars, strings and vibes to the front of the mix.

This feels like a fantastic new direction for Paul and Alan, and having heard a preview of their forthcoming album, it is safe to say this is a sign of great things to come.

Hopefully Hawks Call will see a vinyl release at some point but for now it is available on digital download from the Delta City Records bandcamp where you can also keep an eye out for the album release coming later this year....
