This May sees Dam Swindle celebrate thirteen years and the 100th release on their constantly on point Heist Recordings label with ‘House of House’, a nineteen track, triple vinyl compilation which brings together a who’s who of house music legends and rising names in the scene.
Featuring contributions from big hitters such as Kerri Chandler, Louie Vega, Cinthie and DJ Sneak alongside emerging artists like Papa Nugs and Lolu Menayed, the collection captures the eclectic, club focused ethos that has defined Heist since its launch back in 2013. Spanning old school grooves, jazzy deepness and peak time bangers, ‘House of House’ stands as both a snapshot of contemporary house music and a testament to the community Dam Swindle have built around the label over the past thirteen years.
The LP opens with Dam Swindle’s own ‘Back To The Old School’, a bumping house jam built around unmistakable M1 organ stabs and a spoken word vocal reminiscing on the pre smartphone era of techno, house and underground raves, setting the tone for the compilation’s celebration of dance music.
Supershy keeps the energy up with ‘Pyrenees’, a Kerri Chandler esque groover with ‘Bar A Thym’ style looping cowbells, off kilter lo fi pads and a killer sax line that weaves through the track with a 90s MAW swagger. Dan Ivy brings things into the present with ‘Location’, featuring North London rapper Biyi delivering UKG inflected rhymes over Ivy’s elastic basslines and uptempo beats.
Chandler’s influence surfaces again in the filtered pads and synth melodies of Kolter’s ‘Need U, Want U’, before Cinthie heads back to the rave with her M1 piano and diva vocal sampling ‘U Gotta Believe’.
Every track feels carefully selected and the highlights are plentiful, from the tribal percussion of Elisa Elisa’s ‘Coco Coco’, to the infectious UK garage of Ossie’s ‘My Heart, Your Heart’, and Kerri Chandler’s ‘Kerriousity’, with its bouncing bassline and wobbly analogue lead, another future classic from a pioneer of the scene..
It is Dam Swindle themselves, however, who come close to stealing the show with five killer tracks, including ‘Call Of The Wild’, remixed twice here by Makèz, taking it from a mid tempo dream dub to a half step afro funk banger which could be my pick of the LP.
The compilation traverses eras and captures the full spectrum of house sounds that have shaped Heist Recordings across its first hundred releases and, in their own words, “is more than just a number – it’s a testament to the community, creativity, and legacy built under the curatorial vision of Dam Swindle.”
House of House is available from May 8th directly from the Heist Bandcamp page and all good record shops
